Cannabinoids & Chemistry
Also known as: terpenes, terps
Aromatic compounds that give cannabis its smell and flavor and shape the character of its effects.
Terpenes are volatile aromatic compounds produced in the same trichomes as cannabinoids. They give each strain its distinct smell and taste — citrus, pine, fuel, berry, lavender — and are thought to modulate the effects of THC and CBD through the 'entourage effect.' The dominant cannabis terpenes include myrcene (musky), limonene (citrus), pinene (pine), caryophyllene (pepper/fuel), and linalool (floral). Total terpene content matters as much as the ratio for flavor intensity.
