Defoliation

Strategically removing fan leaves to improve light penetration and airflow to lower bud sites.

Defoliation is the selective removal of fan leaves to let light and air reach lower and inner bud sites. Done carefully — typically removing large shade leaves at the start of flower and around mid-flower — it can improve bud development and reduce mold risk. Overdone, it stresses the plant and cuts into the photosynthesis that powers bud growth. It's a technique that rewards a light, deliberate hand.
